The internet itself takes a large portion of my day. Any tasks from online banking to chatting on Yahoo Messenger makes it through my common day to day routines. This morning I woke up and took a shower. Afterwards I was brushing my teeth when I heard the same noise YIM makes when someone IM’s me. I looked around and it was completely silent. I went to my computer to see if I had received a message. I had not received any at this point. Now I am starting to hear my computer even when i am far away from it.
I hope this isn’t like the syndrome of living with someone long enough and you begin to look like that person. I know you have seen great examples of this while walking a festival or a mall. You see a couple holding hands that you swear are brother and sister. In this case my computer will never look like me but I am hearing the noises. It’s my 10 year anniversary of owning a computer. Is it possible my mind is connecting with the machinery? Nah, it can’t be. I don’t know what is next, perhaps receiving email in my sleep. I used to leave my computer on in my bedroom and listen to the incoming AOL and YIM messages coming in through the night. I suppose it gave me comfort of almost having someone in the room with me.
I think this is the way of the future for me though. I will be ladened with the sounds of my daily activities as they blend into my everyday non-computing activities through the coined buzzes, dings, and other audio notifications. At least i don’t here the “You Got Mail”.
